| The time has come
to create a meaningful set of goals for how many people with
disabilities should be employed annually. There is so much talk at every
meeting and in every newsletter about the 65% unemployment rate of
individuals with disabilities. Yet, there has been no national goal or
policy established to set an absolute number of individuals who should
be employed. Therefore, we suggest that as an outgrowth of this meeting and
with the support of the National Organization of Disability, the U.S.
Department of Labor, and the U.S. Department of Education that specific
bench marked targets and numbers be identified for 2002, 2004, 2006,
2008, and 2010. These benchmarks can provide a national focus and
transparent illumination of what our specific goals should be. |
